But choosing where to stay in Lake Atitlán with kids can completely change your experience, especially when you’re balancing nap times, meals, and boat rides.
After spending several weeks here as a solo parent with 2 young kids, exploring different towns by lancha and tuk-tuk, we found that some villages work beautifully for families while others are better saved for a grown-up getaway.

Lake Atitlán isn’t one single town, it’s a ring of small, distinct villages, each with its own personality and pace. Boats connect the villages, but docks can be steep, and paths can be slippery after rain, so access and walkability matter when traveling with kids.
Panajachel (“Pana”) is the hub with easy access, groceries, and ATMs. San Juan La Laguna is quieter and colorful. San Marcos attracts yogis and has beautiful gardens, while Jaibalito offers a remote getaway with gorgeous views.
If it’s your first trip, start in Panajachel for convenience, then move to a smaller village like San Juan for calm and connection.

Panajachel: Best for First-Time Visitors and Easy Access
Summary: The most accessible base on the lake, with flat roads, shops, and restaurants that make traveling with kids straightforward.
Panajachel is the best starting point for families visiting Lake Atitlán for the first time. It’s busy, but manageable, with some paved streets for strollers and a lively vibe that gives you access to everything from tuk-tuks to grocery stores.
Personally, I don’t think it has the same charm as some of the smaller villages, but it does have the convenience and ease.

Summary: A calm, colorful town where families can slow down, connect with locals, and explore art cooperatives.
This was our home base and our favorite town on Lake Atitlán. San Juan La Laguna feels safe, welcoming, and full of color. Within a day, we knew which café had the best smoothies and which streets led to the lake.
The town is small enough to explore confidently with kids, but rich in experiences: murals, women’s weaving cooperatives, and gentle hills for exploring by foot.

Summary: A lively, budget-friendly town with easy boat access, fun cafes, and Spanish schools, great for adventurous families with older kids.
San Pedro is often known as the “backpacker town” of Lake Atitlán, but that’s only part of the story. Beyond the main backpacker street, you’ll find a community vibe, colorful murals, and a ton of affordable food options.
Families who like a little more action, or want to practice Spanish, will find plenty to love here. Just know it’s not ideal for toddlers or light sleepers, as music and nightlife can carry.
We stayed in the smaller quieter, smaller town of San Juan and took daily trips to San Pedro to explore, enjoy delicious food and markets, and join in on cultural classes.

Crucero Atitlán offers spacious family rooms (including suites for 4-5), a clean kid-friendly pool, and a balcony view of the volcanoes.

Jaibalito can only be reached by boat or footpath, which makes it feel like a secret hideaway. It’s one of the least-developed villages on the lake (no ATMs or big shops) but that’s part of the magic. I stayed here solo on a previous trip to the lake and it is truly, magical.
Families who love being immersed in nature and don’t mind minimal amenities will find Jaibalito incredibly special.
It’s also home to some of the lake’s best swimming spots and a few beloved lodges known for community and charm.
Bring snacks, cash, and a flexible attitude, and you’ll be rewarded with some of the most peaceful mornings on Lake Atitlán.

La Casa del Mundo
Built into the cliffside between Jaibalito and Santa Cruz, this iconic hotel is reachable only by boat.
While, it’s not ideal for toddlers (many stairs), but families with older kids will find it unforgettable. I stayed nearby on my first stay in Jaibalito and it is stunningly beautiful and peaceful.

How to Get Around Lake Atitlán with Kids
Public boats, or lanchas, run regularly between villages. We found them easy to use with a baby carrier just hold little ones close when boarding.
Fares are around 10–25 quetzales per adult depending on distance. Tuk-tuks are inexpensive for short trips (5–10 quetzales) and are often a highlight for kids, just be aware that boat trips can be bumpy, especially later in the afternoon.

We loved our time in San Juan La Laguna, the sense of safety, the small-town rhythm, and the way locals smiled when our kids ran by.
Next time, we’d probably split our stay between San Juan for slow mornings and Panajachel for easier access to restaurants and quick transport to any of the other towns.

Is Lake Atitlán safe for kids?
Yes. It’s generally safe with reasonable precautions. If you’re anxious about medical access like I often am, choose towns with good access (like Panajachel) and be extra careful near docks. You can also bring your own kids life jacket for boat rides as wearing life jackets is not common.
Can you swim in Lake Atitlán?

Can I use a stroller?
You technically can use a stroller in parts of Panajachel, but honestly, Lake Atitlan is not stroller friendly.
