Lake Balaton from Budapest: A Kid Friendly Visit to Siófok
Looking for an easy getaway to Lake Balaton from Budapest? A weekend at Lake Balaton offers a refreshing break from city life, and it’s a great destination for families with young kids.
Known as the “Hungarian Sea,” Lake Balaton is Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake and is popular with locals for its beaches, water activities, and lively summer vibes. We spent a weekend in Siófok, one of the most well-known towns on the lake, and while it was a fun, relaxing weekend, I probably wouldn’t go back.
Getting to Lake Balaton from Budapest
Lake Balaton is just a 90-minute drive from Budapest, Hungary making it an ideal destination for a quick weekend trip. If you don’t have a car, there are frequent trains and buses connecting Budapest to Siófok and other towns around the lake.
We took the train which was easy to purchase at the train station. The journey is scenic, with views of the countryside and glimpses of the lake as you approach your destination.
Tip: If traveling by train in a large group you may want to book your tickets in advance, especially during the summer months when locals flock to the lake. The 1st class tickets were sold out for our group of 5, but we didn’t mind sitting in the lower class area.
Where We Stayed: A Cozy House in Siófok
For our stay, we rented a charming house with our friends. The property was perfect for our group, with plenty of space for our 5 year old to play and a cozy outdoor eating area for relaxing after a day at the beach. Siófok is known as the “Capital of Balaton” and has a wide range of accommodations, from budget-friendly apartments to upscale resorts.
Day 1: Exploring Siófok’s Beaches
We arrived in Siófok in the late morning and headed straight to the beach. The free beach in Siófok was our first stop, and I’ll admit, it was a bit underwhelming at first. Instead of the sandy shores we had imagined, the beach had a swampy feel with shallow water, murky sand, and patchy grass instead of a sandy shore. However, once we adjusted our expectations, we found plenty to enjoy.
Our 5 year old loved playing in the shallow water. It was a relief to know he could stand safely while splashing around. We rented a pedal boat with a slide, which was a highlight of the day. We spent hours sliding into the lake, it was truly fun for kids and grown ups.
After some time on the water, we walked along the promenade and grabbed ice cream from a nearby stand. The beachside vibe was lively, with families picnicking, kids playing, and music drifting from nearby cafes.

Day 2: A Visit to the Paid Beach and More Adventures
The next morning, we decided to try the paid beach to see if it offered a different experience. To our surprise, it was quite similar to the free beach in terms of amenities and atmosphere. However, it was less crowded, which made it a bit more relaxing.
We spent the morning swimming and discovered clams buried in the sand—a bit of a surprise. Later, we rented another pedal boat with a slide and ventured further out onto the lake. The views from the water were beautiful, and it was a peaceful way to spend the afternoon.
Afterward, we tried a local dish called Langos. It is fried dough with sour cream and cheese, yes it was very heavy and stick to your bones sort of meal, not really my type of beach food, but it was fun to try.

Then, we strolled through the touristy area of Siófok browsing souvenir shops. There are ample places to pick up inflatable water toys, souvenirs, restaurants, bars, and more.
Our oldest picked out this Pikachu hat with moveable ears. It was a win because he loves Pikachu but also he wore the hat the rest of our trip which made him easy to spot from a far.
Dinner in Siófok: A Mix of Surprises
For dinner, we chose a local restaurant that came highly recommended. The menu featured pizza and salads, so we decided to order both. The pizza was delicious, but the “salad” turned out to be a plate of pickles—a humorous twist that we still laugh about! Dining in Siófok is an adventure in itself, with plenty of options ranging from casual eateries to fine dining.
Our 5 year old, an adventurous eater, shrugged his shoulders and said I love pickles before eating half the plate of “salad,”

Impressions of Siófok
Siófok has a vibrant, youthful energy that’s perfect for a short getaway. The town is known for its nightlife, with bars and clubs that cater to partygoers. While this wasn’t our focus pregnant and with a kid in tow, it added to the lively atmosphere. We noticed that most visitors were locals, which gave us a glimpse into Hungarian vacation culture.
For families, Siófok offers a mix of activities. While the beaches weren’t the pristine sandy shores we’d hoped for, the shallow water was ideal for young children. Renting boats was a highlight, and the abundance of inflatable toys and souvenirs kept the kids entertained.
Would We Return to Siófok?
While we enjoyed our time in Siófok, we’d love to explore other towns around Lake Balaton on our next visit. Towns like Tihany and Balatonfüred are known for their picturesque settings and family-friendly attractions, and we’re curious to see how they compare. Siófok is a fun introduction to the lake, especially for a short trip, but there’s so much more to discover around Balaton’s shores.
Tip: If you’re visiting Lake Balaton with kids, bring along water shoes for the “sandy” areas and be prepared for the shallow depths. Renting pedal boats is a must, as it’s a fun way to explore the lake and create lasting memories.
